Stage 55: Moline to Princeton, IL, 44.09 miles

Today was a great day, the kind I am doing this for. 44 miles down the Hennepin Canal Trail, with nature and wildlife all around and a lovely traffic-free path to run on. I saw lots of herons, other birds and a beaver. Well not actually a beaver. It looked like a beaver and so when I got to the visitor’s center (sic – well actually the original had no apostrophe but I just couldn’t do that) at mile 36 I popped in to say ‘Hi’ and find out what small mammal I’d seen crossing the trail. As soon as I explained it looked like a large brown glove puppet, without the human attached, the very helpful lady showed me a picture of a muskrat and I recognised it immediately. So I saw a muskrat.

Internet connection is shaky so just to say I was delighted with around 9 hours on a very hot day – it was 105degrees at the visitor’s centre – and am looking forward to the remaining 14 miles of the trail tomorrow.

Tonight’s great food find is the Caramel Apple Frosty from Wendy’s, perfect calorie replacement… as was the Strawberry Shortcake Frosty, well it was a long hot day!

  1. so glad you had a good day Jen – it takes the bad to appreciate the good and it sounds as though your spirits are high… well done…

  2. Well if you want to be really pedantic, it would be “visitors’ center/centre”… Looks like a case of Muphry’s law to me (yes, that is intentional). Glad to see things are going so well and that you’ve been enjoying the last few days so much! Don’t let poor grammar bring you down.

    • As I turned off the computer I realised with horror I’d written it as they had in the sign ‘Visitor’s’ as if expecting only one visitor at a time – which may well have been the case! I don’t know how I slept but I did. I might be tired and have run a lot but poor grammar should never be excused.

And it’s ( note apostrophe in the right place) hot here as well. Sounds like another great day. Have a good day tomorrow and another sweet treat.
